The Food Team at the Active Wellbeing Society recuperates surplus produce (fruit and vegetables) from Birmingham wholesale markets which we use to make 1200 tasty and nutritious vegetarian/vegan meals on a weekly basis. These meals are then distributed via the Birmingham Food Justice Network to people experiencing food insecurity who attend food banks, food pantries and community cafés.
Kitchen helper in the Surplus Kitchen
Work side by side with our kitchen staff turning surplus food into tasty vegetarian meals that are distributed across the city.
What will I be doing?
- Sorting, prepping and chopping produce
- packaging meals and washing up
Ideally 10am – 3pm on any weekday but any time is appreciated! e.g 2 hours would help
Markets helper
This role is the first part of the process of turning surplus vegetables into tasty meals. Based at Birmingham Wholesale Markets you will learn first hand find about how food comes into Birmingham and keep the unit in tip-top condition.
What will I be doing?
- Picking and sorting through fresh produce at the Wholesale markets
- Some lifting and use of light machinery such as pallet trucks and a bit of data-entry.
8am – 1pm, any weekday (even an hour you can spare would help)
Driving helper
We regularly need drivers for transporting food! A range of journeys, usually from Digbeth or Aston to various parts of the city.
