Welcome Change supports Glebe Farm Library transformation

By Kate Grantham

Welcome Change is a Community Interest Company (CIC) owned by Welcome charity. Welcome Change aims to help individuals who have overcome drug or alcohol dependency to rebuild their lives, while at the same time making a positive contribution to local communities. They currently operate a charity shop, cafe and community centre in Shard End, and a charity shop with warehouse in Lea Village, all of which provide work experience, volunteer placements and job opportunities for people living in the local area, as well as to individuals in recovery.

They are always keen to get involved in new projects and initiatives that help us to meet their aims, and have recently been working in partnership with Glebe Farm Library, following concerns from the local community about the reduced opening times due to council cuts. This meant the library was now only open for just three days each week so Welcome Change met with local councillors to see if they could help increase these hours and create a community hub. They have had some real success and have been able to work with local agencies to now open the library 5 days a week and offer free debt and employment support, support for carers of individuals with mental health issues, as well as direct support for individuals with mental health issues.

In addition, Welcome Change have been able to transform the grounds with the support of local companies.

They are planning the library’s first ever summer fete on 28th July to showcase the new groups to the community, and show the public that the library is a real community hub and exciting times lay ahead!
