Meet the Team: Andy Whelan
LoveBrum would not be able to operate without its incredible board of 11 dedicated trustees. Our trustees play a vital role in helping spread understanding and awareness of our charity, and also supporting HQ with their various expertise!
Andy Whelan, works within the Public Sector and is passionate about making our city an even better place, which is why he chose to join LoveBrum as our Fundraising Trustee!
Find out why Andy loves Brum…
What’s your background and where are you based?
I grew up on the Gospel Estate near Acocks Green and joined the Army 2 weeks after my last school exam when I was 16; I stayed in the Army for the next 14 years. Since leaving the Army I have continued to work within the Public Sector all over the Midlands region and nationally in a variety of roles.
What does your trustee role entail?
My role is to maximise new and existing fundraising opportunities to help LoveBrum support projects across Birmingham. I create and identify potential events, with the objective of raising funds, and start to put together a plan of action! We realised the fundraising potential of the recent Simplyhealth Great Run Birmingham Half Marathon for LoveBrum and 80 fundraisers ran for LoveBrum in extremely wet conditions, and we hope to have raised over £25,000 for the charity.
Why do you love Brum?
My childhood was spent in Brum; nationally it’s the second city but we all know it’s really the first! I came ‘home’ when I left the Army. So much is happening here in Birmingham – you only need to look at the developments taking place across the city and the Commonwealth Games coming here in 2022. Exciting times, what is there not to love!?
What projects are you passionate about?
Opportunity is my passion, which links to all the projects that LoveBrum supports. Each project or cause gives a group, or an individual, an opportunity that they may not have had without support from LoveBrum. Any project within Birmingham can apply for funding if they need less than £2,000, that’s why LoveBrum is unique and is what being given an opportunity is all about.
