Volunteering in Birmingham #MyCharitableChristmas
Here at LoveBrum, we think of ourselves as an umbrella platform. A platform in which we showcase the fantastic ways people are helping others in Birmingham. With all the excesses of Christmas, it’s so very easy to forget about those who are alone at this time of year. We’ve been approached by 2 projects on the hunt for volunteers this month: Serve Our Brummies and Uplands Allotments. Why not give a little back this year and join in!
Uplands Allotments Community Kitchen Clean Up
Saturday 10th December
Uplands Allotment Co-operative Association, will be constructing a community oven and an associated spaces on their site in Handsworth. Based on a design from local architects, they’re planning to convert their ‘shack’ allotment space into a community kitchen and an outdoor environmental learning zone for local schools and community groups. But, they need your help in clearing and preparing the site.
Their aims are to educate and encourage a better understanding of the process of food manufacture, production and sustainable resource management. Funding was granted earlier this year for the renovation at Uplands. Sadly, the whole project has been delayed by weather, the site being badly storm damaged in the summer. We would hugely welcome you to help – bring your wellies too!
Renovations start on December 10th and they aim to build the oven itself, using cob, to be completed by Easter. The local group will be on site throughout the winter to lay the groundwork, volunteers are welcome who would like to get involved in the project.
The address is 326 Oxhill Rd, Birmingham B21 8EX. The entrance is just after the car wash.
Serve our Brummies Christmas Party
Saturday 17th December
The fantastic organisation behind our Summer BBQ for the homeless, are hosting their annual Christmas Party. They’ve reached out to us for volunteers to join them to help cook / serve up food on the day.
‘Serve our Brummies’ are a local soup kitchen, that work tirelessly throughout the city centre providing food, clothing and support to people living on the street – all year round!
There will be a sit down Christmas meal with musical entertainment and gifts for their guests. The event will be taking place at St George’s Community Hub, Great Hampton Row, Birmingham
