Throughout October, LoveBrum celebrated physical health by showcasing three incredible projects, each dedicated to supporting people of all ages with a variety of illnesses and disabilities across the city.

We were delighted to see LoveBrum members voting for their favourite project, and saw an amazing number of people get behind all three causes.

£2,000 WINNER–Steps to Your Healthy Future

Steps to Your Healthy Future is a charity working to support those with long term conditions, such as diabetes. The organisation is community-based and brings people together to offer mutual support from those with similar conditions.

£2,000 will support three of the current groups – in Handsworth, Sparkhill and the City Centre – to be funded for a further year, allowing Steps to Your Healthy Future to continue increasing awareness of their groups, and diabetes, in the local community.

£1,000 WINNER–ecobirmingham

ecobirmingham’s mission to support Birmingham in making the transition towards a low-carbon and sustainable lifestyle. By inspiring and supporting communities across Birmingham to take positive action, they want to demonstrate that building low carbon communities brings benefits, opportunities and well-being to everyone, whilst protecting our environment. ecobirmingham runs a variety of programmes to help people gain a variety of skills and raise awareness of local issues.

It is also home to Cycle South Brum, their cycling initiative, which provides cycling tuition for people of all ages, and works to increase the confidence of people learning to cycle so they are encouraged to cycle more. In addition to cycling tuition, the project organises bike rides where all abilities can participate, promoting good health in Birmingham and encouraging those who may be isolated to socialise with others in their local community.

The £1,000 funding from LoveBrum will enable ecobirmingham to purchase two new Isla bikes, which are the best for teaching children with additional needs, as well as contributing towards the cost of more staff to devote to the running of the project, ensuring that as many people as possible have access cycling tuition.

£500 WINNER–Focus Birmingham

Focus Birmingham is a specialist charity providing expert support, advice and information to anyone in the Birmingham area affected by sight loss or other disabilities. Because sight loss and disability affects family, friends and carers, Focus Birmingham work to support them too.

Your £500 of funding will help to expand Focus Birmingham’s sensory book library, providing different experiences and stories for their service users. Focus Birmingham’s service users with more profound disabilities or sight loss can benefit greatly from sensory books, as they develop a response to stimulation, improve participation in group activities and further develop an interest in people, events and objects.
