Congratulations to our July winners!

By Kate Grantham

LoveBrum received the exciting news in December 2017 that the charity would receive £250,000 of National Lottery funding from the Big Lottery Fund, the largest funder of community activity in the UK. The new grant has meant that, as of June 2018, we will be able to fund all three projects that are showcased each month. Our valued members will continue to vote for the three causes each month, with one winning £2,000, one winning £1,000 and one winning £500.

July saw one of our biggest voting rounds yet, with so many of our members getting involved to show their support for their favourite children cause!

£2,000 winner-Noah’s Star

Noah’s Star is a sibling support group, providing an area for children to play whilst their parents spend time with their sick or premature baby. Noah’s Star was founded out of Jo-Anne’s, personal experiences. In July 2015, Jo-Anne’s twin sons, Oscar and Noah, were born at just 25 weeks. Sadly, Noah only lived for 30 hours and at only three days old, his brother Oscar suffered a stroke which led to bleeding on both sides of his brain. Thus, Oscar has cerebral palsy and, due to his prematurity, also has chronic lung disease. Even during this extremely difficult and emotional time, Jo-Anne was determined that Noah’s life would matter, and make a difference to other families.

The £2,000 funding will support the recruitment of more volunteers to allow Noah’s Star to expand, and provide support to even more families. Check out the video from the day we visited them at Birmingham Women’s Hospital to present their cheque!

£1,000 winner-Kidz Come First

Kidz Come First was set up in response to the lack of opportunities for some children in more deprived areas of Birmingham. Children from these backgrounds are often marginalised and excluded from certain opportunities, with working parents struggling to access after school support and childcare during the school holidays. Kidz Come First supports parents and children by providing a before and after school club, and holiday club. They focus on providing a service in more deprived areas with limited, or unaffordable, childcare.

The £1,000 funding will allow Kidz Come First to provide free childcare places, and lunches, for families who need this, allowing parents to attend job interviews, or continue to work during the school holidays, whilst their children are properly looked after.

£500 winner-Kids Need Both Parents

Kids Need Both Parents provides support to separated families, and those affected by bereavement or long-term illness. The organisation works to make a positive impact on the lives of other families and children experiencing separation, providing them with the tools to strengthen their relationships and encourage communication. Their main aim is to strengthen the foundations of a family’s future relationships and give children a voice.

Your £500 of funding will help to cover the costs of a trip to Blackpool, where most will have never visited before. The group will visit the beach, enjoy fish and chips and ice cream, as well as a football match and the Pleasure Beach whilst they’re there.

Thank you to everyone who voted! Don’t forget to vote for your favourite project this month!
