Congratulations December Winners!
Throughout December, LoveBrum showcased three amazing projects, each one supporting vulnerable older adults within our community. We’re absolutely delighted to announce our final three winning projects for 2018!
£2,000 WINNER-Karis BeFriends
Karis BeFriends supports the elderly community across Birmingham, and helps to prevent isolation and loneliness by organising a variety of events, such as afternoon tea, for people to attend, but also through their befriending scheme, where volunteers visit older people who may not be able to leave their homes. The scheme offers friendship and connection, as well as providing practical help such as assisting people in getting to appointments, providing advocacy where there are issues that need resolving, and enabling people to continue their interests and hobbies.
£2,000 will cover the cost of a Christmas gift bag to everyone attending Karis’ annual Christmas party, as well as spreading Christmas cheer and distributing them to all those who won’t be able to. The remaining funding will allow the project to expand their services throughout 2019, helping them to organise more individual and group trips to allow their service users to continue to have new and exciting experiences.
£1,000 WINNER-Umberslade Nurseries
Umberslade Nurseries is owned by Queen Alexandra College, a specialist charity for people with disabilities. The college realised that Umberslade offered a perfect setting to engage the local community. Umberslade Nurseries offers weekly activity sessions for elderly people, as well as their family and carers, as a way to socialise, get together with other people and reminisce. The weekly sessions include hands on gardening and crafts, music and other fun activities for the community, as well as a drink and piece of cake!
£1,000 will allow Umberslade Nurseries to invest in their sessions, using the funding to provide refreshments, as well as craft and gardening supplies to cover the cost of these for a whole year, whilst expanding on the activities that they are able to offer.
£500 WINNER-The Stonehouse Gang
The Stonehouse Gang works with all members of the community to bring people together. One of their projects is the senior citizens group, which provides a place for older adults to come and socialise, as well as organising activities such as bingo, outings or parties. Ultimately, the group ensures that these older adults are not alone, and continue to enjoy life experiences, rather than just exist.
The £500 funding from LoveBrum will support The Stonehouse Gang in replacing the existing heating system with a brand new one, which would encourage more people to attend, supporting even more older adults in the local community.
