Free At Last
” Provide Opportunities for the Young People ”
Free At Last is a community driven organisation that focuses on the young people of Nechells. They are committed to providing a broad range of opportunities for all, including support, mentoring, counselling, and focusing on their mental and physical wellbeing.
What is Free At Last?
As well as activities, entrepreneurial opportunities, youth clubs, debt and benefit advice are also offered to help support the local wider community. This is important as there is nowhere else locally, workshops or colleges, that offer this opportunity irrespective of a young person’s grades or ability to learn. This is vital as Nechells has the 2nd lowest number of qualifications in the city (15%) which automatically decreases a young person’s opportunities, especially in relation to further education.
Nechells is among one of the most deprived wards in Birmingham – the individuals who live in Nechells have a 50% lower income than the national average at just over £10,000 and only 1/3 of the people are employed.
The young people of Nechells receive support from Free At Last through youth workers, advisors and mentors who are always willing to offer help and encouragement. They help support the young people of Nechells along with the wider community, by enabling skills and instilling a more resilient mindset in order to create change, and provide services to the community with the resources necessary to improve quality of life, finances, and opportunities, whilst simultaneously trying to break the poverty cycle. One of the ways this can be done is by providing Workshops for them to attend, where they can learn employability skill sets to help them move forward.
If successful, what will you use your LoveBrum funding for?
£2000 would be used to fund these workshops for the Community. Additionally, the funding will enable individual experts in their fields to come in to teach the young people different skills such as Photography and videography skills in their green room and IT room, so young people can produce short programmes and learn how to create this content on their own.
