Bromsgrove and Redditch Network – BURT
‘We help anyone who can’t get out on their own across Bromsgrove District’
Bromsgrove Urban & Rural Transport – known as BURT – is a local community minibus service, helping residents of Bromsgrove District who are unable to make essential journeys by conventional transport.
What is Bromsgrove Urban & Rural Transport?
Bromsgrove Urban Rural Transport, affectionately known as BURT, has been the local community minibus service since 2009. The bus helps residents of Bromsgrove District who are unable to make essential journeys by conventional transport, either because of personal mobility/disability difficulties or because suitable services are not available.
For the last two years the scheme has been operated by Bromsgrove and Redditch Network. The registered charities helps to provide support and services to the local community and voluntary sector organisations.
Although open to all ages, the passengers of BURT are almost exclusively elderly. The service is more than transport, with many people who travel suffering with dementia and need escorting from their home, reassured on the journey, escorted to their destination, and then returned home – safely. Many wheelchair bound clients cannot get out of the house without help, and so are assisted all the way. The service also provides a much needed break for carers.
BURT enables local residents who wouldn’t otherwise get out of the house to regularly, providing the opportunity to attend luncheon clubs, exercise classes, dementia clubs and go shopping and garden centre trips. It is a lifeline service for residents, that in some cases is their only opportunity to get out of the house.
If successful, what will you use your LoveBrum funding for?
Funding from LoveBrum will help Bromsgrove and Redditch Network to keep the BURT mini bus on the road. The bus requires constant maintenance and safety checks for their tail-lift, which enables wheelchair users to access their services.
£2,000 funding would provide 6 months of fuel for the community minibus.
