Birmingham Peoples Centre

‘We allow people who’ve incurred problems at work to seek redress.’

Birmingham Peoples Centre is a charity that began operating in 2013 to meet the unmet need for free employment rights advice. It is the only organisation in Birmingham that provides such a comprehensive free employment rights rights service.

What is Birmingham Peoples Centre?

Over the last 5 years, advice agencies in Birmingham have closed and legal aid has been cut back, which has reduced the availability of employment rights advice in the city.

Birmingham Peoples provides free employment rights advice, casework and representation, recognising that when things go wrong at work, this can have a devastating impact on a person’ wellbeing, as well as their financial situation. The centre exists for those who have nowhere else to turn to – people from disadvantaged backgrounds, who cannot afford legal advice and who do not understand their employment rights, or do not have the confidence or knowledge to enforce them. The centre assist over 1,000 people each year and about 50% of those do not have English as their first language. They have also noticed an increase in the number of clients with mental health issues.

Birmingham Peoples Centre supports people with a variety of employment law issues including unpaid wages, notice or holiday pay, disciplinary hearings and unfair dismissal.

The centre is run by a team of three but has built up a committed volunteer base. Not only does the centre support the community with employment advice, but provides excellent work experience placements for local law students to experience, and support, real life cases.

If successful, what will you use your LoveBrum funding for?

It is important that Birmingham Peoples Centre have the necessary resources to provide a professional service to the people they support.

The funding from LoveBrum would help Birmingham Peoples Centre to cover the cost of their rent, but also their internet and phone lines, which are vital in order for them to support as many people as possible.
