Birmingham Blaze FC

‘Offering a safe place where people of all abilities and walks of life can come and just be comfortable.’

Birmingham Blaze FC was founded in 2005 with the intention of bringing together people of every background primarily to play football but also to have fun, talk, organise events and to provide a safe, non-judgemental environment, where the LGBT community can play football with the peer support that is generally not available in mainstream clubs. Birmingham Blaze FC has gone on to compete in the National GFSN League and works to tackle homophobia in football.

What is Birmingham Blaze FC?

The Birmingham Blaze FC team consists of members with a range of abilities, ages, and backgrounds, who come together each week for training, matches or social events. They pride themselves on inclusivity and competitiveness. Some members, who want to take part in the competitive element, volunteer for selection to play as part of the team, whilst others simply enjoy the training that takes place each week. Birmingham Blaze FC currently train each Wednesday evening, and compete in around two league matches per month. Their members simply have a love for the game, and a desire to play!

Since its formation, the club are active members of the only LGBT League in the world – the GFSN (Gay Football Supporters Network) League, and now also compete in the MUL (Midlands Unity League). The team travel all over the UK for matches – from Scotland to down South, and they won the title in 2016!

Every February, there is a big movement in football against homophobia and, during this month, Birmingham Blaze FC work closely with local teams, Aston Villa and Birmingham City, acting as advisors to them on how they can help to tackle homophobia.

From September 2018, Birmingham Blaze FC will be joining a local mainstream football league in the hope to bring more awareness to who they are, and what they do!

If successful, what will you use your LoveBrum funding for?
