Birmingham Blaze FC

”Adding Diversity to Football”

Birmingham Blaze Football Club offers a safe space for the  LGBTQ+ community to enjoy football.  The main aim of the project is to make football more accessible for LGBTQ+ people.

What is Birmingham Blaze Football Club?

Founded in 2005, Birmingham Blaze FC is an LGBTQ+ team competing in local Birmingham leagues as well as nationally and internationally in tournaments.

They train together twice a week, and anyone from the Community can join, regardless of their background, and indeed their football skills!  The Club also take part in several anti – discrimination campaigns throughout the year to spread awareness and also try and stop Homophobia in Football.

Birmingham Blaze hope to provide more opportunities for the LGBTQ+ community to play and take part in football related activities , with aims to:

  • Increase awareness amongst non-LGBTQ+ people about the existence of the club, it’s aims and the barriers they experience.
  •  Increase wellbeing, both physically and mentally, and provide opportunities to meet like-minded people and therefore reduce social isolation.
  • Increase membership and numbers taking part in activities – potentially reducing the discrimination faced when taking part in football related activities.
  • Increase number of football sessions, meaning they can cater to players of all abilities.

If successful, what will you use your LoveBrum funding for?

£2000 funding would go towards the costs of Pitch hire, and running the Club – paying for referees etc.  The club has always strived to provide ‘football for all –  this includes people who may be financially excluded from taking part. The funding would allow them to subsidise the cost of sessions, travel or equipment for those who who would otherwise be unable to afford it, as well as provide Social opportunies too.
